Zi-Cha 煮炒/大炒

Restoran Win Yin 容原宮保田雞粥

This is the place where my cousin has always been wanting to bring me to. She claims that the frog porridge here is better than the one I brought her to.

We ordered the frogs in “gong bao” flavour, sliced fish in spring onion and ginger, stir fried lala, peanuts and preserved vegetables, together with 5 servings of porridge. Each frog is RM7.50 and the whole meal cost RM$66.50.

I felt the frogs weren’t as flavourful as that I had here. But the sliced fish were not bad. The lala was not bad too.

The only bad part is we were really thirsty after our dinner. Probably too much MSG in the food.

U Crab Wang Restaurant 柔蟹皇海鲜饭店

Had supper at this place yesterday at Seremban. We ordered 3 crabs cooked in 2 flavours – mushroom and chilli (辣子). We were quite apprehensive about the mushroom one at first but since the waitress said it is one of their most popular flavour, we decided to give it a try.

We couldn’t really tell how they made the mushroom gravy, but guessed they probably used Campbell’s canned soup and added onions, garlic and cheese. It was quite flavourful.

The chilli one was not bad either, with curry leaves, dried shrimps, garlic and chilli. I felt it was not spicy enough.

The crab was meaty but had a slight tinge of muddy taste. Price – RM$63 per kg.

The restaurant offers 28 types of flavours of crab. Besides this, they also have a “zi char” menu.

Note: Mosquitos are abundant at night. Spray insect repellent first if you are eating supper.

Ah Yat Seafood

My family and I came here for the first time to celebrate my mum’s birthday. They had this set promotion at the time and we ordered the $198++ set. This was very worth it because the portions were big and they were not stingy on the seafood ingredients. Every dish served onto our table was a “WOW”.

My favourite was the braised e-fu noodles with Boston lobster. I would expect lobster to be tasteless when cooked in this manner. However, it was so sweet and full of the sea flvour on every strand of noodle, sauce and the tender lobster meat itself. Suckling pig did not have the foul “piggy” taste so I could eat it! Shark’s fin was generously seen in every of our bowls. The fish was well accompanied with the  fragrant soy sauce. It was the first time I’ve eaten Alaska king crab too. This is where the authentic long crab stick meat come from! We were given a special pair of scissors each and I had fun eating them!

As for the dim sum I had with CP on another occasion, there is nothing worth mentioning. Dim sum is obviously not their forte.

Har Gao $4.20
Steamed dumpling with scallop $4.20
Siew Mai $3.80
Deep fried banana ball with red bean paste $4.20
Deep fried scallop in yam paste $3.80
Baked Mini Egg tarts $3.80
Pan-fried turnip cake $3.20
Steam ricesheet roll with shrimp $4.80

Dim sum items at 50% off from Mon to Sat and 40% off on Sundays and PH.

Tea/Water/Nut/Towel at $2 per pax.

Westlake Restaurant

This has always been one of my favourite places since young. My dad used to drive the family from the east to the west just for their kong ba bao. But over the recent past 10 years, we only went back once. Dad explained it was too far away. CP stays in the west and one very fine weekend, we were all at his house for majong. However, I wasn’t one of the majong kaki since I had alot of work to complete. Hence, while they were having their majong fun, I was sadly working away at his dining table. After they finished one round, I suggested Westlake for dinner! So we drove down and had a little trouble finding the place because Google’s search results didn’t indicate that it was a BLOCK. We ended up driving around Crown Centre along Queen’s Road. Westlake is wrongly mapped on Google Maps, so please ignore that!

Eventually I called up the place to ask for more specific directions. So readers, drive all the way down Queen’s Road to the housing blocks (towards Empress Road). Westlake is located on the second floor of the carpark Block 4.

JH loved the Yam basket the most while CP and I devoured the fish maw soup delightfully. Von’s bf enjoyed the kong ba bao the most. They even went back there twice without us after that! CP also went back for their fish maw soup without us!!

The yam was so “yammy” and tender! Frog legs were so full of ginger and onion flavour that none of the ginger or onion (besides the frog legs) were spared. Fish maw soup was generous with prawns, crab meat and thick fish maw. The soup was well divided into 6 portions for each of us. The beancurd was also very good, the red garnish that came with was very appetizing and went very well with rice.

Chinese Tea – $0.70 per pax
Towel – $1 per pax
Peanuts – $2
Plain rice – $0.80 per bowl

On previous occassions, I have tried their hor fun and fried rice which my Dad and I deemed the best in Singapore! Can’t wait to go back for more satisfying food!

Seng Kee Black Herbal Chicken Soup

Ooohooo!! Alas a good pig’s kidney mee sua that is in herbal soup! If you don’t like pig’s kidney ($5) or is afraid of the “smell”, you can choose it with plain pork ($4). Really good to eat this when the weather is cold.

Seng Kee is also famous for its seafood, especially steam fish. Other popular dishes include Clay pot Sesame Chicken, Clams La La, Golden Threaded Balls and Fried Pepper Crab Bee Hoon. It was featured in one of MediaCorp’s food program before.

Just be mindful of the China waitresses there who can be quite indifferent and straightforward. You have to order the food yourself at the counter.

Por Kee Eating House

We went to this place for my Dad’s 60th birthday. Situated near many famous eating places in Tiong Bahru, this restaurant rests in a quiet corner with humble interiors. You can see big tanks with live seafood.

The food is not bad. I liked the fish, prawns and beancurd. The prawns were big, the soon hock was chewy and the beancurd was tender and flavourful. This was also the first time I see longevity noodles cooked in such a style. The ones I have eaten uses egg noodles cooked in dark sauce, then topped with quail’s eggs.

Steamed Soon Hock in Cantonese style: $49

P.J. Seafood Restaurant 人打靈興旺钓鱼场餐馆

Big Prawn Sheng Mian

Like the big prawns and taste. As I always believed, 煮炒/大炒 is always better in Malaysia.

Stir-fried Vegetables

Cheese Crab

This is the crab you have to try!! It is butter cheese crab served in a claypot. The cheese doesn’t get hard after a while, and the flavour is rich. A pity the crab is not Sri Lanka crab, otherwise it would be better.

La-la Mee Hoon

I have only eaten the soup version of la-la bee hoon. This one is the 煮炒/大炒 style. Love it!! Especially eaten together with green chilli-padi!

The place is not air-conditioned, and the roof was old. So you could see long planks of wood running all over the roof, and hiding lots of lizards. We were a little afraid that the lizards would add some unwanted “seasonings” to our food. Also, because the place is located beside a big pond, there were mosquitos. It got quite uncomfortable there. They should do up the place, and probably could attract more customers.

Chin Lee Restaurant

My family went to this restaurant to celebrate my Dad’s birthday. The food is not that fantastic and being located in the neighbourhood, the price is not cheap. Their salted fish fried rice is good, got the “wok-hei”. On top of this, I must must must recommend their Or-ni or yam paste dessert which is one of the best I’ve tasted. The portion is small though, but really worth trying. I’m thinking of just going down to eat their or-ni!

大食家 (Big Eater)

This a place you cannot miss!! This place sells fantastic crabs and zi-cha. My favourite is their crab bee hoon in XO soup! No place sells this taste this good. The soup is really fragrant with the freshness of crab as well as the XO they poured in.

Next is their black pepper crab. Spicy black pepper together with curry leaves and crab’s roe – HEAVENLY. Their chilli crab with mini buns is ok. Not fantastic. If you’re not craving for chilli crabs, you should order something else on the menu like cereal oats crab or butter crabs.

Another of their restaurant must-eat dishes is their black Hokkien Mee. This restaurant uses udon, unlike others using flat mee (like those in lor mee). Fragrant with deep fried pork fats (猪油炸) ensures you leave the place with guilt. Very few places can serve such nice black hokkien mee.

I would also recommend you their “la-la”. Very different taste here. Not the hawker centre taste. They fried it with lots of mini shrimps (虾米). Another one will be their deep fried prawn meat in beancurd skin. Their fried rice is good too. The hor fun is not that great.

1 kg of crab for $38. Usually their crabs are big (more than 1 kg each)
No service charge in this restaurant. This gives you really affordable meals with such good tasting food.
