Saveur

So much hooha about this budget fine dining fusion French restaurant! Finally got a chance to try out at the Far East Plaza branch. Not a big fan of French food but some of the food did leave an impression.

The foie gras with lentils was so good that we did not hesitate to order a second one. It was firm on the outside but soft inside and the taste was not too “liver-y”. The truffle mash was good too but I thought the one I had at Poulet was better. The tenderloin was seasoned very well and cooked to how I liked it. Yummy!

I had another occasion to dine at Concetto (also by Saveur) at The Cathay (2 Handy Road) and ordered the pan-seared wagyu shoulder tender served with roasted portobello mushroom, foie gras and beef jus. I must say the taste still lingers in my mouth.

It’s deconstructed tiramisu was also worth a try!

The Marmalade Pantry

A sweet cafe located in the quiet side of ION Orchard, this place serves a quiet get-together with your close buddies. I like the cafe’s decorations and it’s open concept. If you’re looking for a place to rest your feet while shopping in Orchard or want to get out of the bustling crowd, this is a really good choice.

Goodwood Park Hotel

Goodwood Park Hotel is having a special Mao Shan durian puffs this season till 30 June 2011! Get your butts down to satisfy your durian cravings!

Here’s what CP, JH and I had some time back:

We ordered durian puffs, durian cake and durian ice cream cake. The waitress said the durian strudel had to take 1 hour to thaw before they can serve us. Otherwise, we would have ordered that. That looked really delicious!

The durian puffs were really thick and creamy. The durian custard was not too “squishy” and every bite was generous on the durian custard. I wonder if the three of us will be able to find time off to go back for their Mao Shan durian puffs. 🙂 Shall arrange that!

Durian Cake (1 slice) $9
Durian Puff (6 pieces) $14.80
Durian Ice Cream cake (1 piece) $12.80

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JH and I went again for the Mao Shan Power Puff! It was really powerful! It was BIG and super flavourful! Much much tastier and “durian-y” than the D24 durian puffs. JH was still busy editing the power puff photograph on her iPhone and I was busy eating away. I just couldn’t resist! When she was finally done, she asked why did I eat so fast! But it was really irresistable!
Mao Shan Power Puff
It looked like Hong Kong’s pineapple bun with a crispy sweet crust. But once you cut it open, the aroma of durian diffused out willingly. Hmmm! Crispy crust with soft durian filling, sweet bun with bitter durian… totally took my senses away! I would have preferred if the durian filling was more pulpy.
Durian buffet is now on till 17th July 2011 at $26.80++ per person. However the choices are limited and durian ice-cream is not included.
Chocolate Destenation (DeSté)
I really liked the al-fresco style of having desserts here. The cafe is cosy and had a good ambience. They served a variety of desserts, cakes, gelato, freeze, smoothies and frappucino.
tiramisu - $7.80
I initally wanted to have their Black Forest, but it was sold out. So I had this Tiramisu instead. This was topped with mascarpone cream with coffee-soaked ladyfingers, chocolate pearls and dusting of grand cru cocoa powder. The coffee-soaked ladyfingers were really really nice with a little bit of moist.
Stefano's Grandma Cake - $7.80
My friend had this grandma’s cake. It is a home-styled apple pie with meringue, almonds and chocolate streusel. I thought it also tasted of cinnamon when I tried it. Not as nice as my tiramisu.
Some other cakes include:
For now, there are several promotions namely the dessert degustation set @ $14.80+ (daily from noon to 6 pm) which includes a pastry of your choice, one chocolate bon bon, a scoop of gelato and coffee / tea. Alternatively, enjoy a 1-for-1 Hot Chocolate on Tuesday or Ladies Night on Wednesday for a 1-for-1 Chocolate Cocktail and Wine from 5 pm till late.
Definitely coming back to try more of their desserts!
10% discount using AMEX, UOB and Citibank credit cards.
Ma Maison Restaurant (Japanese-French fusion food)
Ma Maison is the French word for “My Home”. The ambience is cottage-like, with country-style curtains and furniture. The place is dimly lit so it is definitely not like any other Japanese restaurants with tatami.
Our orders:
Escargot Baked with Garlic Butter ($9.50 for half dozen) – extremely aromatic garlic and flowing butter that makes you crave for more snails. Very well baked and it has been the best I’ve eaten so far. We ordered a dozen of these!
Cheese Fritter $9.20 – deep fried cheese coated with batter. Not cheesy so you won’t feel sick after two bites.
Scallop Carpaccio $9.80 – a must-eat appetizer. The sauce that comes on top of each scallop is so refreshing and cooling. It literally opens up your stomach for your main course! How would I describe it? Cool, a little sour, a little sweet topped with orange fish roes and onions. Lost for words.
Cuttlefish Ink Spaghetti $15.90 – Share this with your friends. It gets a little dry and sick after a few mouthfuls. There is very few pieces of cuttlefish. Such a pity. How I wished they would add some seafood to the dish to make it more worthy of the fragrant cuttlefish-inked black spaghetti.
Italian Hamburger Steak with Cheese (160g) $16.90 – A whole piece of cheese topped on top of your thick hamburger steak with some greens as sides. The hamburger steak is not dry inside, and the cooking was good as the steak which was almost 2 cm tall was cooked thoroughly in.
Chilled Red Wine (Prom Mama) $12.30 per glass – My friend commented that it is not the best red wine in town. It is “sting-ing”. Oh well, nothing beats our favourite at The Wine Company. Throughout the course, we were discussing when to visit The Wine Company again for some nice wine and their seared black pepper tuna. AAAAAAAHHHH!!!!
Their specialties are Special Beef Stew, Original Hamburger Steak and Paella. Their menu also include the traditional katsu curry rice. Well, it does serve some Japanese food. However, a pity there wasn’t much variety of food to choose from in their menu.
Reservations is a must as their restaurant is small and usually packed with diners.
Hello Kitty Sweets Restaurant
Hello Kitty Fans out there!! This is a place you definitely have to visit when you go Taiwan. You’ll be mesmerised by their decorations and food! Even their toilet has Hello Kitty decorations! Their waitresses are dressed in pink laces and they really looked sweet and cute! This two-storey cafe will make your visit worth-while. Make sure to bring your camera there and snap as many pictures as you want!!
Shop Front
A minimum spending of NT$300 is required to dine in. It is easily achieved as the desserts sets are more than NT$300 and they come with your choice of drink and a Hello Kitty jelly. We were there during their “winter” period, so there weren’t mango desserts. We were so full after having the dessert that some of us packed back the Hello Kitty jelly. The pink box was printed with Hello Kitty! SO KAWAII!
The dessert sets are the most photogenic and tasty part of Hello Kitty Sweets’ menu. Most of them are decorated with Hello Kitty-shaped chocolate pieces, Hello Kitty drawn on with icing, or green tea or chocolate-flavored powder sprinkled through a Hello Kitty stencil directly onto the plate.
The pictures say it all!!
The price range:
NT$330 for dessert sets and NT$350 to NT$500 for entrees.
Cointreau black chocolate tart 君度黑巧克力塔, NT$360
